Russell Schofield

Born: Ayr, Scotland

Raised: Williamsville, New York

Lives: Bethesda, Maryland

Russ Schofield has been interested in art most of his life and has experimented with several mediums including oil, watercolor, etching and wood sculpture. Since his retirement from banking in 2007, Russ has devoted his time to oil painting. In the past, he produced illustrations for government agencies, trade associations and businesses, but his work now is purely a creative endeavor.

Russ has recently exhibited work at the Yellow Barn Gallery, the S. Dillon Ripley Gallery (A Smithsonian Institution), and is permanently shown at Gallery 322 in Maryland. He was recently invited and gave a presentation of his work to the staff and students of the Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey.

While he prefers portrait and figurative studies, he also paints a variety of large-scale landscapes that reflect the subtleties of his preferred palette. Russ strives to capture complex changes in color and mood created by changing atmospheres.

His early days as an illustrator are best exemplified in his portraiture, completed in watercolor and oils over the last thirty years. He continues to develop his ability to capture the mood of a subject while mastering the technicalities of skin tone and proportion.
