Samuel Musa

The artist held various key management and research positions in government, industry and academia. He was a former Adjunct Professor of Engineering and Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Northwestern University. He was then on special assignment at the National Defense University where he was Homeland Security Science and Technology Chair and Senior Research Fellow. He earned a doctorate in applied physics from Harvard University.

He started painting after retirement 12 years ago. He began with pastels then acrylics and now oils. He had no formal art training but began taking studio classes at NOVA.

His work has been accepted at the juried Art shows at Millwood, Piedmont in the Plains, Oatlands Plantation, and the Live an Artful Life gallery in the Plains. He had a two-month solo art show of his paintings at NOVA, Manassas campus, which was highlighted in the Gainesville Times in an article “Physicist-turned-painter’s work featured at Colgan” and reported in the Washington Post weekend section of Community Calendar in Prince William County. He has also exhibited at local art shows in Charlotte and Mathews, North Carolina.

He recently conducted research in some aspects of art and has published a paper on “Relationship between Music and Painting: Replication of Emotional Response”, Proceedings of the International Association of Empirical Aesthetics, New York, 2014. In addition, he presented another paper on “Emotional Response to Paintings: An Awe Sensation”, which was presented at the 2016 IAEA Congress on Empirical Aesthetics in Vienna, Austria. Two years ago, he presented a paper on "Emotional Response to Graphic Designs: at the 2018 IAEA Congress in Toronto, Canada. He recently published a paper on "Emotional Response of Artists to their Best Paintings" in the International Journal of Education, Humanities and Social Science, May 2021. He also presented the paper at the 2021 IAEA Congress on Empirical Aesthetics in London.
