I’ve always been creative, playing with any medium I could. It used to be that the more technical medium, the better, but I’ve simplified so I can create anywhere and any time. Painting is a way to figure out the world around me. I try to capture mood, light and contrast, whether I’m working more realistically or more abstractly; I often gravitate toward the trickier subjects, and capture the world around me as I move through it. Plein air painting for me is a way of participating in the world and recording what is happening around me. I started painting en plein air during the pandemic, and now I bring my painting kit with me just about everywhere, including on my sailboat when I overnight somewhere on the Chesapeake, travelling in the American Southwest, or elsewhere in the world.
