Rebecca Jones

“These paintings make me happy”.  This is the comment Rebecca Grace Jones most often hears about her work.

Rebecca was born and raised in Western Maryland, the youngest in a family of artists.  She created her first book of illustrated poetry in the second grade.

After earning an MFA from Towson University, Rebecca taught in the art department of her alma mater for 12 years.  She also freelanced as a graphic artist, winning numerous awards and having her work included in the New York Society of Illustrators annual publication.

Decades into her career, as many commercial artists do, Rebecca made a decision to do her own thing and started painting. Working in acrylics with mixed media, she quickly found a personal style which a friend coined as “seriously whimsical “.

Influenced by the country setting of her home in West Virginia, Rebecca’s canvases depict scenes of peace and charm.  She says of her work, “I have a few different approaches when I begin paintings.  Sometimes I start with a layer of gesso to which I add texture before it dries.  Other pieces start as designs of shapes in neutral tones.  In both cases, the second step is to apply an additional, translucent layer which allows either the textures or the shapes to show through.  I let these features suggest details that I enhance and develop into a composition.  The result usually takes on the quality of a landscape of sorts, populated with what I’ve come to see as my iconography of natural and structural symbols”.
