Elyse Smith

I am a teacher, a student, an artist, and an explorer of all that life has to offer.  My life is full to brimming over with color.  I am strongly influenced by the emotional context of the scenes before me, as well as by my  impressions of the artistic expressions of others.   I am influenced by the serenity, the pathos, or the grandeur of the natural world...from the seashore to mountain summits, and I attempt to interpret these emotions on the two-dimensional oil canvases I paint.

As a small child in the Bronx, I would go out on the fire escape of our apartment overlooking the streetscape below, and observe the changes from time to time, from hours to seasons, of how the colors changed as light direction and its intensity changed.  Since then, I have had numerous opportunities around the world to observe this play of light in creating Nature's ever changing moods, and am inspired to reflect these moods through portraying their nuanced hues of color in my paintings.

I was extremely fortunate (and appreciative!) to have had Snow Fielding to help mold and guide my artistic development.  While I may have benefited from the experience of other classes and workshops along the way, I am fully indebted to Snow for all the instruction, insights, and care she has bestowed upon me.  I hope that you, too, might find interest, and solace, in my resulting artistic expressions.
